BE SAFE
“Be Safe” externalizes the uneasy terror of belonging to a marginalized gender while navigating a culture of victim-blaming. For the month of February, Julz created a “romantic,” satirical retail installation featuring 120 intentionally warped resin pepper sprays, arranged across three wearable purse sculptures. The work rhetorically raises the question of whether victims should be held responsible for preventing violence, or whether perpetrators should instead be expected to learn not to be violent. Installed on Valencia Street in San Francisco, the project was visible to more than 10,000 pedestrians daily.
